A Local SEO Citation Cleanup Project Nobody Wanted to Do

Fixing 200+ inconsistent business listings across directories is tedious, unglamorous work. It also fixed a ranking problem three other tactics had failed to touch.

SEOCase Study

A multi-location client had tried content, backlinks, and a Google Business Profile overhaul to fix stalled local pack rankings in two of their six markets. None of it moved the needle. The actual culprit, found almost by accident, was that their business name and address had been entered inconsistently across roughly 40 directories over a decade of different agencies managing the listings.

Different capitalization of the suite number. A 'Street' abbreviated as 'St' in some places and spelled out in others. One directory still listing a phone number from a location that had moved two years prior. None of these looked like a crisis individually. Collectively they were sending Google a confidence signal that something about this business's identity wasn't settled.

The unglamorous fix

We built a single canonical NAP (name, address, phone) record for each location, then went directory by directory — not just the big three, but the regional and industry-specific ones nobody thinks to check — correcting every inconsistency by hand. It took three weeks across 200-plus listings for six locations.

  • Major aggregators (Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Maps, Yelp)
  • Data syndication sources that feed smaller directories automatically
  • Industry-specific directories with surprising domain authority
  • Old directory listings from defunct or rebranded business names that were never removed
NAP consistency isn't a ranking factor you can see move. It's the floor everything else stands on.

What moved

Within ten weeks, both stalled locations moved from outside the local pack into it for their primary category terms. Nothing else changed in that window — same content, same review velocity, same backlink profile. It's genuinely hard to prove causation on a change this diffuse, but the timing and the fact that nothing else shifted makes citation consistency the only reasonable explanation, and it's the kind of fix that never makes it into a strategy deck because there's no clever insight to present, just three weeks of tedious, necessary cleanup.
