The YMYL Content Review Process We Built After a Ranking Scare
A core update hit a client's health-adjacent content hard. We built a review process to prevent the next one. Here's exactly what it checks.
A core update knocked a client's wellness-adjacent content down an average of eight positions across their twenty highest-traffic pages, in a single update cycle, while their closest competitor's similar content barely moved. That gap is what got us a real review process instead of another generic content audit.
We pulled the surviving competitor's pages and our client's pages side by side and looked for structural differences rather than keyword differences, since the content covered nearly identical topics. The pattern that emerged was about sourcing and accountability, not writing quality.
What the review process actually checks
- Every factual claim traces to a cited primary source — a study, a government guideline, a named expert — not another blog's summary of one
- A named author with a visible, verifiable credential relevant to the topic, not a generic 'staff writer' byline
- A visible last-reviewed or last-updated date, and an actual process behind that date rather than a cosmetic refresh
- No unqualified medical, legal, or financial claims presented as fact without a hedge or a source
- A disclaimer where the content could be mistaken for professional advice it isn't
A core update doesn't punish bad writing. It punishes claims nobody could stand behind if asked.
What happened after rollout
We ran the twenty hardest-hit pages through this checklist, rewrote the ones that failed multiple criteria, and left the ones that already passed alone as a control. The rewritten pages recovered roughly two-thirds of their lost positions over the following two core update cycles; the untouched control pages stayed flat. It's not a guarantee against future hits, but it turned a vague fear of 'the algorithm' into a concrete, repeatable checklist we run before anything YMYL-adjacent ships now.
