Marketing inside someone else's storefront

Selling on Amazon or Etsy means marketing inside a storefront you don't control, governed by an algorithm you can't see and rules that can change without much notice. This is a fundamentally different discipline from running your own ecommerce site: there's no custom landing page funnel, no control over checkout UX, and often no direct customer relationship — Amazon in particular restricts seller access to buyer contact information precisely to keep the customer relationship with the platform, not the seller. Marketing effort on a marketplace is mostly about winning visibility and conversion within a fixed listing format, not about building an owned audience.

Marketplace marketing vs. owned-site marketing

What actually moves rank and conversion on Amazon

Amazon's search ranking responds heavily to conversion-rate signals and sales velocity — a listing that converts well at its current traffic level tends to get shown to more traffic, which is why a strong listing (clear title, keyword-relevant bullets, quality images, competitive price) compounds over time while a weak one stalls regardless of ad spend behind it. Review count and rating remain a major trust signal buyers weigh directly, and Amazon's own review-solicitation tools (automated post-purchase request) are typically the only compliant way to request a review — direct outreach asking for a review, especially incentivized review requests, violates Amazon's terms and risks account action.

text
[ ] Title: primary keyword near the front, readable, not stuffed
[ ] Bullet points: lead with benefit, include secondary keywords
[ ] Images: lifestyle + close-up + size/scale reference + infographic
[ ] Backend search terms: cover synonyms, misspellings, use cases
[ ] Price positioning checked against direct competitors in results
[ ] A+ Content / Brand Story live if brand-registered
[ ] Review velocity monitored — flag unexpected negative review spikes
[ ] PPC campaigns structured by intent (exact-match defense terms,
broad-match discovery terms) not lumped into one campaign

Algorithm dependency is a real business risk, not a footnote

A policy update, a suspended listing over a compliance flag, or a ranking algorithm change can cut a marketplace seller's revenue sharply within days, with limited recourse and often slow, opaque appeals processes. Sellers whose revenue is concentrated on a single marketplace are running a concentrated platform-risk business whether or not they frame it that way. Diversifying channels, retaining whatever first-party data touchpoints the platform does allow (packaging inserts, a QR code to an owned list, Etsy's more permissive buyer messaging), and keeping healthy account metrics are the practical mitigations — there is no way to fully eliminate the dependency.

Etsy: a different algorithm, a different buyer

Etsy's search and recommendation system weighs factors like listing quality score (titles, tags, and attribute completeness), shop-level engagement metrics, and recency alongside sales history, and its buyer base skews toward searching for personalized, handmade, or niche items rather than commodity products — so the marketing lever that matters most is often tag/keyword coverage across all 13 available tags plus photography that signals craft and authenticity, rather than price competition. Etsy also permits direct buyer messaging more freely than Amazon, which opens a narrow but real channel for post-purchase relationship building that Amazon sellers mostly don't have.

Amazon vs. Etsy marketing levers

Review solicitationPlatform tool only, no direct askMore flexible buyer communication allowed
Paid adsSponsored Products/Brands, auction-based PPCEtsy Ads, lower budgets typical
Buyer intentOften price/convenience drivenOften craft/personalization/gift driven
External traffic valueCan help, but on-platform signals dominateExternal traffic (Pinterest, social) more directly rewarded

External traffic matters more on Etsy than on Amazon

Etsy's algorithm has historically rewarded listings that bring in external traffic (from Pinterest, Instagram, a blog feature) with a visibility boost, treating it as a signal of demand. Amazon's algorithm is far more self-contained — external traffic can help overall sales velocity, but it doesn't carry the same direct ranking credit, and Amazon's own on-platform signals dominate. A marketplace strategy built for one platform doesn't transfer cleanly to the other.

What's next

Marketplace dynamics are one case where consumer playbooks don't transfer directly; selling to businesses is another, with its own distinct buying behavior. Next: B2B E-commerce Marketing →
