Journey Orchestration Platforms
From single campaigns to multi-step, multi-channel journeys
A traditional email campaign is a single send to a static list. Journey orchestration platforms (Salesforce Marketing Cloud Journey Builder, Braze Canvas, Iterable, Adobe Journey Optimizer) manage multi-step, branching sequences that span multiple channels — email, push, SMS, in-app message, even a sales task — triggered by behavior and adapted based on how the customer responds at each step, rather than a single static send. A journey is a persistent, stateful flow per customer: each individual customer can be sitting at a different node in the same journey at the same time, based on their own behavior and timing.
Anatomy of a journey: entry, branches, wait states, and exit
Every journey has an entry trigger (signup completed, cart abandoned, trial about to expire), a series of nodes (send message, wait N days, check a condition, branch based on an attribute or behavior), decision splits (did they open the previous email? did they make a purchase? route down a different path accordingly), and exit criteria (goal achieved — remove from journey — or journey timeout). The branching logic is what separates orchestration from simple drip sequences: a customer who opens email 1 but doesn't click goes down a different path than one who clicks through and converts, and both differ from one who never opens it at all.

}Drip campaigns vs. journey orchestration
| Dimension | Simple drip campaign | Journey orchestration |
|---|---|---|
| Structure | Fixed linear sequence of sends | Branching, multi-path, can loop or re-enter |
| Channel scope | Usually single-channel (email) | Cross-channel: email, push, SMS, in-app, sales task |
| Personalization of path | Same path for everyone | Path diverges per individual based on behavior |
| State tracking | Minimal — just position in the send sequence | Full per-customer journey state machine |
Journey sprawl creates the same uncoordinated-customer problem decisioning engines try to fix
Re-entry logic is the detail most journeys get wrong on the first build
What's Next?
Journeys are triggered by events, and the reliability of the entire orchestration layer depends entirely on how consistently and quickly those triggering events actually reach the platform — which is the architectural problem event-driven marketing systems are built to solve.
