Snowflake for Marketing Analytics
Separating storage from compute
Snowflake's defining architectural choice is splitting storage (a single shared layer of compressed, columnar data) from compute (independent 'virtual warehouses' — clusters that can be sized, paused, and scaled independently). For marketing analytics this matters concretely: your dbt transformation jobs can run on one warehouse sized for batch throughput, your BI tool (Looker, Tableau) can query through a second warehouse sized for interactive dashboards, and a data science team running ML feature queries can use a third — all reading the exact same underlying marketing data with zero resource contention between them, and each warehouse billed separately for only the seconds it's actually running.
Virtual warehouses and the marketing cost lever
Snowflake bills per-second for compute while a warehouse is active, with auto-suspend (typically after 60-300 seconds of inactivity) and auto-resume on the next query. The practical lever for a marketing data team: give the dashboard-serving warehouse a short auto-suspend and small size (cheap, frequent small queries), and give the dbt/ELT warehouse a larger size for a shorter total runtime (big nightly transform jobs finish faster, often at a comparable or lower total cost than a small warehouse grinding through the same work slowly).
-- Separate warehouses isolate marketing BI traffic from heavy transform jobs
CREATE WAREHOUSE IF NOT EXISTS marketing_bi_wh
WAREHOUSE_SIZE = 'X-SMALL'
AUTO_SUSPEND = 60
AUTO_RESUME = TRUE;
CREATE WAREHOUSE IF NOT EXISTS marketing_etl_wh
WAREHOUSE_SIZE = 'LARGE'
AUTO_SUSPEND = 300
AUTO_RESUME = TRUE;
-- dbt's profile points at the ETL warehouse; Looker's connection points at the BI warehouseTime Travel turns 'someone dropped the wrong table' into a non-event
UNDROP. For a marketing analytics team where an analyst's bad dbt --full-refresh or an accidental DELETE can wipe out a mart table other teams depend on, this converts what would otherwise be a multi-hour re-sync-from-source incident into a single UNDROP TABLE statement.Semi-structured data and the VARIANT type
Marketing API responses (ad platform breakdowns, GA4-style nested event parameters, Salesforce custom field JSON blobs) are naturally semi-structured. Snowflake's VARIANT column type stores raw JSON natively and queryably with dot/bracket notation (payload:items[0].item_id), without requiring a rigid upfront schema — useful during initial ELT landing, before dbt staging models flatten the fields that are actually needed into typed columns.
Snowflake vs BigQuery for a marketing stack
| Factor | Snowflake | BigQuery |
|---|---|---|
| Compute model | Explicit virtual warehouses you size and manage | Serverless, auto-scaled (or flat-rate slots) |
| Native GA4 export | Requires a connector/pipeline to land GA4 data | Native, free, built directly into GA4 admin UI |
| Cost predictability | Predictable per-warehouse-second billing | On-demand can spike with ad-hoc large scans; flat-rate smooths this |
| Cross-cloud support | Runs on AWS, Azure, and GCP | GCP-native only |
| Best fit | Multi-cloud orgs, teams wanting workload isolation via separate warehouses | Teams already GA4/GCP-centric wanting the free native export path |
Secure data sharing for co-marketing and vendor data
Snowflake's Secure Data Sharing lets you grant another Snowflake account live, read-only access to specific objects without copying or exporting any data — no file transfer, no ETL job, no stale snapshot. Marketing teams use this for co-marketing data exchanges with partners, or for consuming third-party enrichment data (firmographic, intent data providers) that's distributed via the Snowflake Marketplace, directly queryable alongside your own tables with zero ingestion pipeline required.
What's Next?
A warehouse only pays off once it's queried effectively — the next skill is writing the SQL patterns marketers and analysts actually need day to day, on top of whichever warehouse the organization has chosen.
