Responsive Search Ads Optimization
RSAs Are a Combinatorial Machine, Not a Fixed Ad
A Responsive Search Ad accepts up to 15 headlines and 4 descriptions, and Google's system dynamically assembles combinations (up to 3 headlines and 2 descriptions shown at once) per auction, scored for predicted relevance to the specific query and user context. You are not writing one ad — you are supplying raw material for a system that assembles thousands of possible ad permutations and tests them against real auctions.
Asset Diversity Beats Asset Volume
Filling all 15 headline slots with minor rewordings of the same idea gives the algorithm little real signal to differentiate on. Google's own guidance (and observed account performance) favors genuine diversity: include headlines that cover different value props (price, speed, trust signals, CTAs, keyword insertion, brand name), not 15 variations of 'Best MarTech Consulting.' Diversity gives the combinatorial system actual differentiated options to learn from.
// Simple coverage checker you can run against your own asset list
// before submitting an RSA, to catch low-diversity submissions
type AssetCategory = "price" | "cta" | "trust" | "keyword" | "speed" | "brand";
interface Headline {
text: string;
category: AssetCategory;
}
function checkCoverage(headlines: Headline[]): string[] {
const required: AssetCategory[] = ["price", "cta", "trust", "keyword", "speed", "brand"];
const present = new Set(headlines.map((h) => h.category));
const missing = required.filter((cat) => !present.has(cat));
if (missing.length > 0) {
return [`Missing headline categories: ${missing.join(", ")}`];
}
return ["Coverage looks good — all core categories represented"];

Ad Strength Is a Proxy, Not a Score to Chase Blindly
Google's 'Ad Strength' indicator (Poor/Average/Good/Excellent) measures asset diversity and relevance signals, not actual conversion performance. An ad can reach 'Excellent' Ad Strength while converting worse than a 'Good' ad with tighter, more specific messaging. Use Ad Strength as a hygiene check during ad creation, but always validate with real performance data over the Ad Strength label itself.
Running Two or Three RSAs Per Ad Group
Rather than relying on a single RSA, running 2-3 RSAs per ad group with genuinely different messaging angles (one benefit-led, one price-led, one trust/social-proof-led) lets Google's auction naturally favor whichever resonates best for a given query and audience, while giving you real comparative performance data between distinct creative strategies rather than just asset-level combinations within one ad.

What's Next?
RSA asset quality feeds directly into Quality Score and ad relevance, which in turn affects your position in the auction. Understanding Quality Score mechanics is a natural continuation from here.
